BAD West

Joe Chirico and BAD diver at the Great Wall of China 2006Boston Area Diving is better known as "BAD"!  Our team has a proud 28 year history and has produced more State and National champions than any other springboard diving program in New England.  We provide an upbeat, positive and accelerated learning opportunity for young divers, whether they are just beginning or have Olympic aspirations.  We offer a team environment which generates pride in participation.

Diving Lessons Program. Lessons are a great place for beginners to start and for high school divers who want learn a few new skills.  Lessons are also the place to start to be considered as a future team member.  Lessons are held on Sundays evenings. Contact Joe Chirico by email at Joe@goBAD.com.

BAD Team Members receive excellent training from national level coaches.  Divers learn solid basic skills to build upon throughout their diving career.  Divers are assigned to the Gold Team, the Silver Team or the Bronze Team based on age and skill level.

Our Diving Practices are held at three different suburban locations, each with ample free parking.  Practices are at Brandeis University, which is conveniently located in Boston's western suburbs, near the intersection of Routes 128 and 30 in Waltham, Wellesley College and the Concord Town Pool.  Practices are held on weekday evenings.  Check out the practice schedule and directions for more information.  We have an open practice policy - in other words, divers do not have to commit to particular days, but may adjust those days as their own schedules require.

Competition.  All BAD team members will compete in AAU sanctioned meets held throughout New England (primarily in Massachusetts and Rhode Island).  As divers progress, they will be invited to attend other competitions throughout the northeast and on the National level, including regional and national championships hosted by United States Diving.  In 2006 season divers competed in Florida, California, Georgia, Indiana, Montreal and China.

Our Website, goBAD.com, is designed to help parents and divers understand what our diving program is all about and it contains everything you need to know about the team:  news, program descriptions, practice and meet schedules, rules and regulations and lots of useful articles.  We will update it regularly with schedule changes, meet entry information, results, team photos and articles of interest.

BAD has a proud Team History, as one of the most dominant New England Junior Team for the past two decades - winning the New England AAU Championships for the past three years, and the U.S. Diving New England Championships twenty times in the past 28 years.  Members of the team regularly qualify for the AAU Nationals and U.S. Diving Junior Nationals and several have gone on to compete internationally.   BAD Diver have have great success getting into and diving in college.

The Coaches.  The BAD coaches Joe Chirico and Jim Brainerd, each have at least 20 years of age group and college coaching experience.  In addition to their time on the deck, both Joe and Jim have received the following training and certifications:  United States Diving Safety Certification, First Aid, Deep Water Rescue and Back Board Safety Training, and CPR.

The Facilities at Brandeis features a 12-foot deep diving well with two 1-meter diving boards.  We also feature the only dedicated room for "dry-training" in the region.  This room includes a dry-board with safety rig, trampoline with safety rig, a dry-tower with spotting belt, a spring floor, mirrors and exercise stations.  This facility is extremely valuable as it allows divers to learn and try new dives in safety harnesses before trying them on the diving board.   Wellesley College features two 1-meter boards and one 3-meter board.  The Concord Pool features two 1-meter boards and two 3-meter boards.
